Design Principles
Task 1
LECTURE
The lecture this week was briefing about the module itself and all sorts of tasks and assignments we will be doing in this semester. The lecture also contented basic knowledges of design elements and principles then the gestalt theory and contrast.
Design Elements
There are 7 main elements of design, which are:
- Line: Continuous marks formed on the surface by moving points.
- Shape: Enclosed space and limited to only two dimensions.
- Space: The distance or area between or around objects.
- Texture: The sensation of the object.
- Color: The amount of light reflected by the object.
- Size: Relationship between the area occupied by one shape and the area occupied by another shape.
- Value: Refers to the lightness or darkness of an object, area, or element, regardless of its color. Value is sometimes called tone.
Principles of Design
Gestalt Theory
1. Similarity- Similar elements are grouped visually, whether they are close to each other or not. They can also be classified by color, shape or size.
Figure 2: Example of Similarity (8 April, 2021)
2. Continuation- No matter how the line is actually drawn, the human eye will follow the smoothest path when looking at the line.
Figure 3: Example of Continuation (8 April, 2021)
3. Closure- This element will make use of human's mind and make them think then fill in the missing parts of the design or image to create the whole.
Figure 4: Example of Closure (8 April, 2021)
4. Proximity- Group objects into one.
Figure 5: Example of Proximity (8 April, 2021)
5. Figure/ Ground- Kind of similar to closure effect but the two sides actually have individual images. You will think it is separate from objects in the foreground of the image from objects in the background.

Contrast
Contrast is when opposite elements and effects are lined up. For example, light and dark colors, smooth and rough textures, large and small shapes.
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Make sure you have TWO designs, one for contrast and one for Gestalt.
2. Upload both designs in PDF file in your blog.
3. Send blog link in Google Classroom.
4. Your blog must be in your actual name for easy identification. Make sure it has:
a) visual research
b) idea exploration
c) feedback from lecturer
d) final design outcome (pictures must neatly cropped and must not be shadowy/blur)
e) brief reflection for the week
PROGRESS
a. Visual research
In this visual research part, I have done it by looking up photos about gestalt and contrast on Pinterest website. I have found all sorts of interesting looking designs like:
designs from Pinterest
b. Idea Exploration
Idea 1: (Gestalt)
Figure 7: "Apple Tree", black paper on white paper (8 April, 2021)
The picture above, figure 7, is an idea of "Apple Tree", if it is visible enough. I did this with some cutting of black papers, cut them into various curve lines or irregular lines then paste them on white paper. Making the lines flow with the shape of a tree-like figure and an apple in the middle. I made use of the gestalt theory to indirectly show the existing of an apple by outlining with the "tree".
This is the way I cut the "branches" for the "Apple Tree":
From my first thought of designing the "Apple Tree", it was these two pictures above which gave me the idea of it by using the concept of trees and other objects line up together as well, creating the gestalt effect. I do hope I can get the shape of the tree right, more visual-comfort.
Idea 2: (Contrast)
For the second idea, I wanted to create design with contrast element. I am inspired by an interesting contrast portrayed music video of a song which I will be sharing a link right after.
The inspiration resource: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtutLA63Cp8
I saw there was a scene of the music video shows the splitting with black and white arranged together and I got the idea of using that method to so the contrast design (can take a look at 1:19 of the music video). I also want to add the lighting shadow technique on this piece, so, it is not just the opposite contrast design, it will be showing the lighting contrast too. This way, it can bring out the so called "comic style". That said, I experimented with it and did the initial sketch of the idea with illustrator, as shown as Figure 8 above. By the way, the character I drew was a singer that I really admire, Ano (あの) from Japan. This design will be in just solid black and white color papers, which means I will print out the illustration and cut them as precisely as I can.
