Design Principles
Task 2

LECTURE

Lecture this week was focusing about the other two of the design principles, which are emphasis and balance.

Emphasis:

By using contrast, isolation, location, convergence, anomalies, and rendering levels in your own artwork, you will begin to control how the story is presented and how the audience interacts with the artwork. In short, emphasis is like the main character in the artwork.

Some visual examples for Emphasis:

Balance:

Balance in design principle refers to the use of artistic elements (such as lines, textures, colors, and forms) in the creation of artistic works in a way that enhances visual stability.

there are two main types of balance:
  • Symmetrically balance- An imaginary line passes through its work center and ensures that the two parts are equal on the horizontal or vertical axis.
  • Asymmetrically balance- Various elements that share opposing visual principles-smaller, brighter, darker or empty forms and spaces are always contrasted and balanced by their counterparts.

1. Make sure you have TWO designs, one for emphasis and one for balance.
2. Upload both designs in PDF file in your blog.
3. Send your blog in Google Classroom.
4. Your blog must be in your actual name for easy identification. Make sure it has:
    a) visual research
    b) idea exploration
    c) feedback from lecturer
    d) final design outcome (pictures must neatly cropped and must not be shadowy/blur)
    e) brief reflection for the week

PROGRESS

a. Visual research:

In this visual research part, I have done it by looking up photos about balance and emphasis on Pinterest website. I have found all sorts of interesting looking designs like:

Pictures from Pinterest

Figure 0.1: FuxiNvwa (伏羲女娲), 14 April 2021

Figure 0.1 above is a picture of FuxiNvwa direct translated from Chinese, it is the mother goddess of Chinese mythology. I found this piece shows the Balance in design principle where the two girls are technically asymmetrically balance with both sides. In other words, I would like to try a sketch based on this ideation.

b. Idea Exploration:

Idea 1: (Balance)
Figure 1.1: Initial sketch of Balance, 14 April 2021

This is a rough sketch of my idea of two mermaids dancing to each other. Positioned in the middle of frame.

Idea 2: (Emphasis)
