PROGRESS

a. Visual research

Figure 1.0: Ideation from Pinterest, 4 April 2021

For the visual research part, I went on Pinterest to start to get some initial ideation on character designs. This is the best way for me when it comes to creating something, and for this exercise, I decided to start off everything by looking at how other people design their characters. I looked up some characters that is monster-like in order to create my very own little monster.

Here are some of more inspiration that I found on Pinterest:

Pictures taken from Pinterest.

Figure 1.2: Hollow Knight, 4 April 2021

This main character from Hollow Knight really caught my attention as a character. I want my character to be a small monster like him as well. As seeing this is an actual character that is officially published online, I think maybe I can get some ideas when I look at him. Other than that, the shapes of this character also seems simple and it kind of matches the vector shapes that provided by lecturers too.

Specific shapes provided

b. Ideations

For this ideation part, I did not really sketch out anything to be honest. I just think of how I want my character to look like and make use of the shapes to just shape it out.

Figure 1.3: Initial idea of my character, 5 April 2021

I wanted my character to be having arm joints like spiders. I'm extremely not sure about having the body to be looking like that though but I was just plainly playing around with the shapes. That said, I used up 2 days to just think about how can I improve my character and make it look more kind hearted as I have done thinking about the story of my character.

2 days later...

Figure 1.4: Second ideation on my character, 8 April 2021

This character of mine really does change the whole mood quickly as I started to just experiment with the colours and so on. This was inspired by the other researches I found on Pinterest:

Figure 1.5: My latest inspiration, 7 April 2021

I tried going for horrific looking character, just like my first ideation which looked ugly and horrifying. But in the end, when I started to apply colour schemes like pastel-like colours, It turns out pleasing and cute to my eyes. I liked how the colours made my character looked soft. That being said, I made use of my spider arm joints to add on to my character. It also looks like the wings of my character too. This actually also added some horror spice to it and I really like it. I also added legs to my character.

Figure 1.6: Closed up cam for the legs, 10 April 2021

Note: This picture is taken days after I added more details, but I inserted it here just to show the close up look for the legs.

After all that changes, I did some adjustments for the proportion and balance of my character. I added two tails that are attached to her thighs just to create the visual of balance. This changes also made up my mind to create a floating or flying character, although she has legs, but it is too short for walking I supposed.

BEFORE that, look at this cute hat I made for her as an aesthetic purpose. ( the sakura petals on her hat also represented her story....)

Figure 1.7: Head wear for my character/ also as a symbol from hometown, 12 April 2021

Figure 1.8: Roughly the whole proportion of my character, 12 April 2021

After all that proportion fixation, I started to do some detailed works. For example, The eyes!

Figure 1.9: Detailed eye work, 12 April 2021

All the gradient techniques that Mr. Kannan taught us on tutorial classes paid off here.. I tried making the eyes looked more dreamy-like for that extra precious part of my character.

STORY TIME

As a finishing touch, I named my character " Drimly Mistchild", First name Drimly, Family name Mistchild. Drimly because dreamly, Mistchild because I just like the thought of having a dark and misty feeling to my character.

About Drimly:

Fear by people due to stereotypes and some background story of same ration creatures. Nobody knows that Drimly is actually kind hearted and built different as she wants befriend with everyone and lend a hand for help as well. Because of how the hometown of Mistchild family (Sakura Isle) is unseen by anyone and along with how these creatures once attacked other ration had been a bad impression on humans and other creatures. The Mistchilds also concured the forest of a villange and made it a ‘Sakura Isle’. The forest is no longer seen by eyes that makes everyone still scared of the Mistchilds.
The Sakura Isle is not visible for outsiders, only the Mistchilds can see and stay in there. Thus, Drimly just wants to be acknowledge by people and get good relationships with everyone, but nobody trust her...

REFLECTIONS

When I first receive this assignment, I thought to myself "Wow, creating our very own character? This would be so much fun." But unfortunately, I legit blanked out at first I viewed the instructions given. We were limited to use 8 specific shapes that are given by lecturer. I mean, this limitation totally makes sense. Of course, it is called a challenge as well, so why not. Then, I really struggled at first when just thinking about a possible character based on the shapes provided. Lecturer said to just draw out our character design and make use of the shapes to align it. But it was sure bold of me to just play around with the shapes and make the character I wanted. That sure did not go well in the first attempt, but I managed to get the idea of how my character will look like in the end. I am pretty proud as an amateur of digital art and on top of that, using the Adobe Illustration I would say. It all also thanks to my lecturer and tutor of course, they taught us how to let the Adobe illustrator do the magics throughout the classes.
