Task 2
LECTURES
There were YouTube videos prepared for us to watch and learn things step by step for the lecture for task 2. In this task 2, we were assigned to create and design a layout using the texts given. There was also some fonts provided and we had to choose the fonts within the 10. This layout designing was actually just like designing some magazines pages that we can see everywhere so we can use our creativity to design the layouts but still following the accurate steps to do it.

In this project, we will need to express the content provided in the 2-page editorial dissemination in printed form. The page size is 200 x 200 per page.
PROGRESS
Task 2: Text Formatting and Expression

Sketches
Idea 1:
Figure 1.3: Initial sketch of ideation 1, 05 May 2021
For this task, I decided to use the 1st option of editorial text provided, which was the one titled with " The Impact of Bauhaus on modern culture". The one principle of the design should be having a nice vision flow for the reader to look at. Thus, this idea came out using the selected key word by me, "IMPACT". All the graphics stays at the left hand side of the 2-page. Made the word "Impact" nice and big right there due to the meaning of the word as the impact falls down to the Bauhaus on modern culture.
Idea 2:
Figure 1.4: Initial sketch of ideation 2, 05 May 2021
Same principle goes with this ideation but with changes of the "Impact" design part. I decided to bring out the meaning of the word "Impact" by making it fade in like something is going to happen, which meant the impact of something. The flow was also from left to right for the reader as the title starts from left and contents at the right-page. Starts from the title, heading, and last the contents.
Figure 1.5: Digitalized keyword, 05 May 2021
After all that sketches of layouts, I started to do the digitalized keyword using Adobe Illustrator. This was from the first ideation. I stacked the characters one by one in order to create this look.
Font used: Janson Text LT Std
Figure 1.6: Digitalized keyword and title, 05 May 2021
This was the other neat outcome of ideation 2, as you can see I also added the rest of the words using Illustrator as well. I did this in order to make the title more of a complete object putting together rather than use the InDesign to type in the rest.
Font used: Janson Text LT Std
Layout as a whole

- Font (Context): Univers LT Std
- Font (Title): Janson Text LT Std
- Text size: 9 pt
- Leading: 11 pt
- Paragraph space After: 11 pt
I was not really sure about this layout because it looked kind of heavy on the right side, the contents. So, I decided to try doing the ideation 2 as well to compare and choose which one should be good enough for final design.

The heading line text had changed it's position from 2nd page of the layout to the 1st page. This was due to I did not want the content side look too crowded because of the long text, in one page so I moved the headline to the top right of the title. This way the reader also gets to notice the headline right after the title as well.

FEEDBACK
Week 6:
Questions asked:
- For the heading, does the design match the meaning of the keyword chosen?
- Does the expression crafted nicely with accurate lines, shapes, and shades for the heading?
- Is kerning and tracking appropriately done?
- Does the font size correspond to the line-length, leading & paragraph spacing?
- Is the alignment choice conducive to reading?
- Has the ragging been controlled well?
- Has cross-alignment been established using base-line grids?
- Are widows and orphans present (the lonely word left in one paragraph)?
General feedback: Images are not allowed, but some very small graphic elements such as lines and shadows are allowed. Hierarchy is a must have in the designs.
Specific feedback: The expression of the heading is acceptable for 2nd design. Hierarchy was right. Accurate flow of texts.
REFLECTIONS
Experience: The moment I received this task 2 and knowing that I will create and design something as like in magazines with text, I thought to myself that this should be easy and when we just have to give expressions to the text, the title. But as I am working through this task, I found that professionally creating a layout is not that easy, especially when we are not allowed to use visual graphics along with not just any type of fonts. I sure started to frustrate a bit when some things are limited, but it all makes sense if its about professionally creating a layout. Of course it was not just struggle when there were tutors guiding us step by step, we technically just have to follow the instructions and do our job so it was quite a fun experience as well because I did learned something new again.
Observation: I have observed that there are so many ideas creating a suitable yet creative titles with layouts and not using visual graphics at all, I have seen many of my classmates' works and it was just so mesmerizing to encounter so many different ideas from different people.
Findings: I have learned that it is not just all about joining the text with visual graphics to bring out the meaning of the words, we get to present the meaning well with just playing around with the text itself.
FURTHER READING
Figure 2.3: Book cover of "Why Fonts Matter", 2016
This is the book that I have done some readings for Typography, "Why Fonts Matter", by Sarah Hyndman, 2016. This book has 144 pages itself as being a short book to read, is was pretty convenient. So, the difference from the other books on the list is that these books focus on the psychological aspects of genre and how fonts affect consumers.
Fonts have different personalities that can build trust or distrust, give you confidence, make things look easier to do or make products better. The scientific basis for understanding how fonts affect reading content. They are hidden in clear sight and trigger memories, associations and multi-sensory experiences in your imagination.
